I turned on PBS tonight to behold a British show, "Chef," about a temperamental chef in an exclusive chalet restaurant in England. I had a vague sense of familiarity, and realized with a shock that the fussy, high-strung chef is played by the same actor who player Lister in "Red Dwarf."
It's very, very, odd. To his credit, the actor has made the transition well, but I keep expecting The Cat to appear, purple-suited and aerosol can in hand, announcing that he'd sprayed everything and made it his.

I will never, ever feel like my literary references may be a tad too obscure for most people, because there's always you and public radio.
It's public TELEVISION. And it's an old British show, Mr. I Live In London. I know, I know, you don't have telly, but ask around, and I'm sure someone will know what I'm talking about.
Andrew had no idea when I asked him.
First of all, Andrew is Australian. Second, I watched Red Dwarf about 14 years ago, whcih would have made Andrew..what? Three?
He'd have especially liked the episode when some Indain take-out is mutated into a giant creature, and can only be killed with beer ("Everyone knows the one thing that can kill a vindaloo is good lager.")
Good, good stuff.
Has he heard of Dr. Who?
FYI, it's not that guy, It's Lenny Henry. whoops.
